My longest running character is my FFXI character, a corsair named Reinbach. When I started playing him, he was a pretty impressionable kid with some dangerous tendencies. He was a nice, thoughtful boy brought in from the streets of San d'Oria. Oliver Twist meets Holden Caulfield (he even wears a goofy red hat).

Recently he's been a lot more fun to play. He's grown up and his confusion is starting to lift. He's got a purpose now, trying to save a little sister that he will lose in a time rift. He's coming around to the fact that he's going to lose, and it's killing him. It's probably the only unselfish thing that he's given more than half a damn about. Playing him trying to hold on has been the most fun I've ever had with the character, and once the story line is over it could get a whole lot better. Reinbach's always seemed two dimensional to me, so playing him like this helps me reign him in a bit. I feel a little bad about making the lynchpin of this character an NPC that I control, but to be honest, he really doesn't give a rats ass about any of the other characters in the game, even the ones he claimed he did. I couldn't see any other way to motivate him.
