It's really hard to believe that Gary Gygax is dead. The guy created Dungeons and Dragons, and without that, I'd never have gotten into role playing. I got my start from reading all the old AD&D books from Second Edition, and playing a few games after school when I was 12. I remember my first character, a half-elf Ranger named Orion. He was kind of cool for a 12 year old's character. I've been role playing ever since, in a lot of different ways. Tabletop, LARP, IRC/AOL, Forum based, AIM based. I like Gygax's vision of a group of friends getting together around a table to stretch their imaginations in ways that society normally doesn't let them the best. I'm heading over to some friends' house to play Mage tonight and I hope that in doing so I honor him.
I think it's safe to say that if it wasn't for him and his game, I'd probably have been cool. And that would have been truly unfortunate. I would never had known about all the fun I was missing out on.
Thanks, Gary. May Pelor light your path.
