To me, the art style reflects the cartoonish atmosphere that Warcraft always had. From the very beginning, Warcraft was a parody of Warhammer. It has since grown out of that, but the cartoony style fits the root perfectly, I think.
It reminds me very much of the old He-Man cartoons.
