I have always wondered why there are so many fantasy based MMORPGs in the market. Today, with the release of hte latest expansion for Final Fantasy XI, Treasures of Aht Urghan, I know why.
It was a race between competing companies to bring you and I, the player something that we could only dream of in our wildest dreams, hidden deep in our subconcious. It is the ability to play the Ninja Pirate.
FFXI has allowed people to play ninjas for the last few years. Indeed, it may be the first to offer the ninja as a playable class. Two years later, they have added the corsair class, which when subjobbed with the Ninja class, allows you to play the Ninja Pirate. I have to say, in spite of competition from Lineage 2 and World of Warcraft, FFXI performed amicably. They didn't fret or falter, even though they were no longer the favorite. They also had to contend with Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates!, for taking the Pirate approach which took a lot of people in, however, they have been hard pressed to find a way to introduce ninjas, and then their subsequent synergy.
My hat is off to you, Final Fantasy XI. You have done well. Everyone else can pack their bags and go home. Especially you, Blizzard. Yeah, I said it.
