The role playing done last night was wonderful. Some players that I was having trouble with mellowed out. Mike in particular has gotten over whatever seemed to be bothering him and seems to be taken by the Cthulhu mythos. I honestly think that most of the problem was a misunderstanding of what the game was about. It took him a while to figure it out, but now he's finally got it. Some rash things were said on both sides, but we persevered and got over it. Mostly because we're friends, damnit, no matter how much we disagree on things. For all the gripes I have about him playing a Customs agent in Iraq, once the group got to Miskatonic University he did some really great role play as a Miskatonic alumnus. It was his research that really got the game back on track. Mike's role play is funny like that. When it's bad it's awful, but when it's good it's awesome. He convinced me that a character that I thought was bad was actually a really good one. Mike gets the "Most Improved" award.

Others who were having problems playing their characters got into the feel of the game and really stepped up. Lauren did amazingly well as a Marine sniper. She gave a good lecture on their duty to the country and how they have to do their job no matter what the situation was absolutely classic. She gets the "Best Performance By A New Artist" award.

I've learned to harness some players' off the wall actions and turn it into a plot device. Dorothy plays the effect of her Sanity rolls bigger than they actually should be. She almost shot someone when she lost two points of Sanity. Now, an underlying psychosis is starting to form in the character. Once we work out what it is, she's going to have a pretty big impact on the outcome of the game. I'm thinking of leaving her in a position to betray the team. She gets the "Lifetime Achievement Award" for Sanity loss.

The other players are doing well. I think Gary is a little disappointed about not being able to cure other people's sanity by being a psychologist. I'm sorry, it isn't that simple. I feel that regaining sanity goes against the Mythos itself. The Mythos is dark and crazy. You do not recover from seeing the things you've seen there. A Call of Cthulhu character should always be on the brink. Anything more or less, and I'm either an evil GM or holding your hand.
